Helios Distillery — based in Kyoda, Nago City on Okinawa Island — is best known for producing Kura The Whisky, a Japanese malt whisky that draws on the distillery’s long heritage of rum, awamori and other spirits. The distillery was founded in 1961 and over decades has emphasized local ingredients, Okinawa’s natural resources, and traditional craftsmanship while expanding its range to whiskies blended and matured using both malted barley and the distillery’s own rum-casks. Today, “Kura” represents Helios’s ambition to carry Okinawan culture and spirit “from Okinawa to the world.”
